The women of Pi Beta Phi recognize that reading is the foundation of lifelong achievements and fulfillment for individuals. Without literacy, people struggle to do every tasks and unfortunately too many children struggle with literacy in America. Their futures are the reason we devote our philanthropic efforts to igniting the desire to learn by inspiring a love of reading and sparking young imaginations. All chapters are built on one premise--the impact we can have when we connect with a child through the power of reading. By the time Pi Beta Phi celebrated its 150th anniversary in the Spring of 2017, we have empowered more than 1 million individuals to achieve their dreams through literacy.
As a part of Pi Beta Phi's philanthropy efforts, many of our women choose to participate in Champions Are Readers (CAR). Every week, we volunteer at the local YMCA in Bangor and we read to second grade students. CAR is always very popular amongst the students and Pi Phi's alike and is one of the most meaningful ways we get to volunteer directly in our community.
The great part about Philanthropy for Pi Beta Phi and all Greeks on campus is that we as ME Alpha chapters get to come together to support our different philanthropies and causes, and bond with other Greek’s at the same time while doing so. We have old annual traditions as well as new events that add to these traditions. As Pi Phi's, our Philanthropy is near and dear to our heart. We as sisters take pride in coming together to help others in need, as well as supporting Pi Phi organizations.
In the Fall we host our annual Arrowspike volleyball competition on the University Mall. In the Winter we collaborate with FIJI and have Pi Phi/ FIJI Christmas and donate toys to kids in need around the area. The Dean of students always comes to thank us for our hard work. We also have our annual Alumni Christmas tea where we come together as old and new Pi Phi's and celebrate traditions and sisterhood. Throughout the year we go to the Bangor YMCA and read to the kids there to support our Philanthropy, children's literacy. We have also recently began a new philanthropy event every spring, called Carnations and Crushes, where we sell and deliver carnations around Valentine’s Day on campus.
